Additional Craft Information:
Quilting is the process of stitching the three layers of a quilt — pieced top, batting, and backing — together. Quilting on a regular sewing machine can be frustrating when you end up with a puckered backing, or in pain from wrestling all that fabric around. Some quilters painstakingly piece a quilt top with pride only to send it out to a professional quilter for finishing. Consider quilting your masterpiece block machine by block for more control over the finished quilt and the satisfaction of completing the whole project yourself.

There are two parts of the process: quilting the individual blocks, and sewing them all together. Sandwich the three layers, with the batting in the middle. Make sure the right sides of the block and the backing fabric face out. Baste the three layers together using the longest straight stitch setting on your machine. First baste an “X” across the entire block, and then baste around the perimeter of the block.
Lower the feed dogs on your sewing machine, if the machine allows it, and attach the free motion foot. Quilt the block while maintaining a steady speed with both your hand movements and the sewing machine. Leave at least 1/2 inch free around the outside of the block. Take two blocks and place one block on top of the other, with the fronts of the blocks facing each other. Fold the batting and backing out of the way and stitch the fronts of the two blocks together with a 1/4-inch seam.

Place the two blocks you just sewed together with the backing facing up. Unfold the batting and backing that you pushed out of the way on the previous step and trim one piece of the batting so the two pieces abut. Press the backing on one side under 1/4 inch and lay the pressed edge over the backing on the other block. Hand sews the two pieces of backing together.
Continue adding block machines in this fashion until the row is completed. Complete the individual rows. To join rows, complete steps one and two in the second section, only with the rows instead of blocks. When all the rows are joined, the quilt is ready for binding.
