Art And Craft Making At Home

Additional Craft Information:

If you are artistic and believe in creativity, you can have a career making carved candles. They suit all festivals, celebrations and occasions that demand lighting. These carved candles can be of different sizes and shapes. In addition, you can prepare theme-based candles with a little investment and time.

DIY Craft Essential #1: Washi tape

You'd be surprised at how many things you can do, and how many tutorials out there are obsessed, with washi tape. The versatile paper tape with adorable designs makes great wall decor, paper crafts or can even spruce up your furniture.

DIY Craft Essential #2: Needle nose pliers

This tiny tool is great for small projects. "This is not only your go-to tool for opening and closing jump rings, bending wire, and securing crimp beads and ribbon ends, but pliers are also great for cutting through jewelry chain and wire," said Morin.

How to make carved candles?

Carved candles can be made at home on a small scale or manufactured on a huge scale as a business. You can use your backyard or any vacant part of your house to set up an area for small-scale candle making.

To make candles, you need paraffin or wax. There are various kinds of wax that melt at different temperatures. Buy the wax that melts at a medium or high temperature. The wax that melts at a low temperature drips a lot and so a lot of it is wasted. The next thing you have to do is make moulds in which to pour the melted wax. Though there are wooden and fiber moulds available, choose a metal mould that can be used over and over again. You can make a metal mould out of galvanized metal sheet. Though it might be a bit difficult to solder the edges and seal the openings, the cast can be used over and again for different colors of wax.

Steps to Make Carved Candles

Prepare a core in any simple shape at home or your warehouse.

Soak the core for one to two minutes in hot wax to soften it.

DIY Craft Essential #3: X-acto knife

If you love stationary crafts, jewelry crafts or any delicate work -- you'll need a proper cutting tool. Not all scissors can do the job. "Remember first using scissors and cutting along the dotted lines in grade school?" Morin asked. "Hopefully, you’re attempting more challenging crafts as an adults."

DIY Craft Essential #4: Spray paint

Acrylic paints are also great for any DIY starter kit. However, if you're looking for a perfect, seamless finish on your furniture, art and home decor -- make some space to spray. It doesn't hurt to keep some cans in your favorite colors (as long as you store them properly).

Dip the soaked core into different colors of molten wax. About 10-15 layers of colorful wax make it look sturdy and strong enough to be carved.

Once the dipping is done, the whole structure remains warm and brittle for about 10 minutes. Carve the candle and give it the required shape within those 10 minutes. Once the candle hardens, chances of breakage are more.

Use a regular paring knife or any other sharp tool to make the cuts and give the candle the desired shape. Dust the remains with a soft brush.

Once the carving is done, dip the candle into acrylic glaze. It adds glitter and shine to the carved candles. Let the candle dry for one to two hours.

Once the candle dries completely, you have the finished product in front of you.

Warnings and Tips

Do not heat the wax directly. To maintain the temperature of the wax use a water heater and heat the wax in the hot water. Be sure there are no flammable substances around you when you are preparing the candles.

Usually, you can get colorful wax in the nearest shops but if you cannot, then you can mix colors in to the molten wax until you get the desired shade.

Carved candles are one of the best gifts and there is a great demand for them. As carved candles have not yet made significant appearances in super markets and malls, they can be easily marketed. You can either approach the nearest shops and super markets or advertise your carved candles on online shopping websites such as EBay and Amazon. In addition, you can advertise in your neighborhood so that your neighbors, relatives and friends can buy carved candles for special occasions.
