Flannel might be a good option if you're preparing to start a quilting project and are looking for new ways to liven up your designs or for various ideas to introduce a change to your regular routine. There are many choices when it comes to materials, and flannel should not be overlooked, whether you are making a quilt for a special purpose, or just for the fun of it.

DIY Craft Essential #1: Washi tape

You'd be surprised at how many things you can do, and how many tutorials out there are obsessed, with washi tape. The versatile paper tape with adorable designs makes great wall decor, paper crafts or can even spruce up your furniture.

DIY Craft Essential #2: Needle nose pliers

This tiny tool is great for small projects. "This is not only your go-to tool for opening and closing jump rings, bending wire, and securing crimp beads and ribbon ends, but pliers are also great for cutting through jewelry chain and wire," said Morin.

It could also provide you with warmth and comfort in your home as a piece of a quilt; it is not just for lumberjacks, and it could do more than keep you cozy in the elements. Soft enough to be a great contribution to any quilt, flannel is a diverse fabric that is strong against the cold.

When you get back from a full day of skiing or any other outdoor activity that might leave you cold and looking for a good warm place to curl up, it is optimal for the winter months, or for introducing some flavor to your cabin for yourself or your loved ones. When you add a few pieces of flannel to the mix, it will give your quilt a bit of something special that will impress your guests; quilts are known for being a thing of warmth and comfort.

DIY Craft Essential #3: X-acto knife

If you love stationary crafts, jewelry crafts or any delicate work -- you'll need a proper cutting tool. Not all scissors can do the job. "Remember first using scissors and cutting along the dotted lines in grade school?" Morin asked. "Hopefully, you’re attempting more challenging crafts as an adults."

DIY Craft Essential #4: Spray paint

Acrylic paints are also great for any DIY starter kit. However, if you're looking for a perfect, seamless finish on your furniture, art and home decor -- make some space to spray. It doesn't hurt to keep some cans in your favorite colors (as long as you store them properly).

As flannel might be a bit more difficult to use than your average quilting fabric, if you plan on introducing flannel into your work, there are some things to keep in mind. It's a good idea to wash it a minimum of two times in hot water and dry it thoroughly in each turn to shrink it as much as you can, whether buying wholesale flannel fabric, or reusing used flannel. If you don't and it ends up shrinking at a later time, then it could destroy your quilt.

If you administer steam, you will also probably affect the dimensions of the piece of flannel and potentially destroy your design; do what you can to stay away from steam. You reduce your likelihood of a problem later on by spending the additional effort to pre-shrink the flannel as much as possible, and the added time is well worth the cause.

Flannel is a terrific option for quilting and should not be passed over due to the temperamental nature of the fabric, although it could be a little more trouble than other materials. Quilting is a diverse hobby, and to continue to hone your skills, all quilters should try to include flannel into a quilt or two; if you do it right, you will be pleased that you did.

DIY Craft Essential #5: Painter's tape

Painter's tape is "perfect for for attempting the color block trend," said Morin. Plus, you'll need something to keep your projects neat and tidy, no matter what type of paints you use.

DIY Craft Essential #6: Hot glue gun

There are some tools that are too functional not to have. "This is one DIY workhorse tool you shouldn't do without," said Morin. Hot melt glue works on a variety of materials.
