Craft Kits

Additional Craft Information:

Although Christmas is about much more than presents, sometimes a thoughtful gift can show someone special how much you appreciate them. That perfect gift can often be hard to find, it takes a lot of brainstorming, usually a lot of searching, and sometimes a little extra coin. But most of the time the perfect gift isn't even one that costs a lot of money. The perfect gift is sentimental and is about more than just a material possession. During this time of year when looking for that special present a lot of people turn to homemade goods. Craft fairs are held frequently throughout the Christmas season for just that reason. Knitted scarves, hand crafted wall hangings and baking all seem to be popular items gracing the tables of Christmas fairs.

DIY Craft Essential #1: Washi tape

You'd be surprised at how many things you can do, and how many tutorials out there are obsessed, with washi tape. The versatile paper tape with adorable designs makes great wall decor, paper crafts or can even spruce up your furniture.

DIY Craft Essential #2: Needle nose pliers

This tiny tool is great for small projects. "This is not only your go-to tool for opening and closing jump rings, bending wire, and securing crimp beads and ribbon ends, but pliers are also great for cutting through jewelry chain and wire," said Morin.

Artistic people of all kinds come out in full force during the holiday season but while Christmas used to be the only time of year you could easily purchase handmade goods, crafting has now began to permeate gift giving all year long. Thanks to websites such as, independent artists now have a platform to sell their goods online year round. These websites connect the buyers and the sellers directly and allow artists to sell their goods nationally, instead of just people to wondering by their booth at a fair. On their website the creators of Esty say their goal is to help small businesses shape the economy and provide value to and heart to commerce. There are currently more than 800,000 active sellers on Etsy according to their site.

The movement is growing and appears to be working for both the sellers and the buyers who may be people like me, who love the idea of homemade things, but just aren't crafty enough to make them themselves. The question is, why do things that are homemade appeal to us so much? What is it about handcrafted jewelry, one of a kind clothing pieces or handmade wooden toys that make them great gifts? The answer is probably a little bit different for everyone.

DIY Craft Essential #3: X-acto knife

If you love stationary crafts, jewelry crafts or any delicate work -- you'll need a proper cutting tool. Not all scissors can do the job. "Remember first using scissors and cutting along the dotted lines in grade school?" Morin asked. "Hopefully, you’re attempting more challenging crafts as an adults."

DIY Craft Essential #4: Spray paint

Acrylic paints are also great for any DIY starter kit. However, if you're looking for a perfect, seamless finish on your furniture, art and home decor -- make some space to spray. It doesn't hurt to keep some cans in your favorite colors (as long as you store them properly).

The most obvious answer is that homemade gifts are simply that, homemade. Time, effort, and passion were all put into making each item perfect. Homemade items are usually creative, they don't look like the same old boring things you can by at any Walmart across the country. Of course there are also those people who buy homemade gifts because they make it look a person put a lot more thought into the gift than they actually did, which to be honest, can be helpful in a crunch. Regardless, even if you take out the cutesy, trendy factor of homemade goods there are still a lot of reasons they are appealing. Purchasing items at fairs promotes buying locally. It not only helps small businesses in your community but also has an ethical and environmental benefit. You know where the crafts came from, you know they weren't shipped across an ocean and you know they weren't made using child labour. These are things that are getting harder and harder to detect at big box stores. No matter what the reason is for the growth in the home based industries, I think they are here to stay.
