Additional Craft Information:

Everyone should know a few sewing fundamentals before learning how to sew with a sewing machine. Knowing how to select a good sewing machine for a new seamstress is one of the first things one has to do.

DIY Craft Essential #1: Washi tape

You'd be surprised at how many things you can do, and how many tutorials out there are obsessed, with washi tape. The versatile paper tape with adorable designs makes great wall decor, paper crafts or can even spruce up your furniture.

DIY Craft Essential #2: Needle nose pliers

This tiny tool is great for small projects. "This is not only your go-to tool for opening and closing jump rings, bending wire, and securing crimp beads and ribbon ends, but pliers are also great for cutting through jewelry chain and wire," said Morin.

Some new sewers are lucky to have a sewing machine already available. It belongs to mom or grandma. The person who owns the machine may be able to assist you in learning how to use it. They could even still have the owner's instruction manual, which would be quit helpful.

If you do have to purchase a sewing machine, one can often discover one at a thrift store, yard sale, or on Craigs list. Ahead of buying a pre-owned machine, it would be good to find out what a sewing machine repair shop would charge to inspect it and perform the work. It could cost less to purchase a new one.

Ask for the models with the least number of features as you're looking at new sewing machines. The simplest machine includes everything that a beginner needs. As the years go by, you could find that you would want a machine that does decorative stitching or has other fun features. At this time the added features could make everything more difficult.

DIY Craft Essential #3: X-acto knife

If you love stationary crafts, jewelry crafts or any delicate work -- you'll need a proper cutting tool. Not all scissors can do the job. "Remember first using scissors and cutting along the dotted lines in grade school?" Morin asked. "Hopefully, you’re attempting more challenging crafts as an adults."

DIY Craft Essential #4: Spray paint

Acrylic paints are also great for any DIY starter kit. However, if you're looking for a perfect, seamless finish on your furniture, art and home decor -- make some space to spray. It doesn't hurt to keep some cans in your favorite colors (as long as you store them properly).

There are a number of books on sewing for beginners. It definitely is beneficial to purchase one. They usually include a few patterns. So, you can complete your first project while you are learning. Any of us who sew understand that one can really only learn by doing.

Other than the sewing machine, there are a few basic tools that you'll need. A good pair of fabric scissors will make all your projects simpler. Multi-purpose scissors used for cutting things other than fabric won't be as sharp. Dull shears are awful to use.

You will need needles for the machine. If you have an owner's manual, the size and type of needle to use will be in the manual. If you don't have a manual, you could use the internet to find information about the make and model of your sewing machine.

Patterns specifically designed for sewing for beginners normally have precise step-by-step instructions. Those directions are not included in the advanced patterns, this is why beginning patterns are the wisest choice for now.

You'll most likely want to buy fabric for the finished project, but before cutting out the pieces or attempting to sew everything together, it's a good idea to practice on remnants of fabric. Select scrap fabric of like thickness as the new material. That'll allow you to test out your sewing machine.

These were a few of the sewing basics you will need to keep in mind. If you're like most sewers, you will always be trying more advanced methods on how to sew with a sewing machine.

DIY Craft Essential #5: Painter's tape

Painter's tape is "perfect for for attempting the color block trend," said Morin. Plus, you'll need something to keep your projects neat and tidy, no matter what type of paints you use.

DIY Craft Essential #6: Hot glue gun

There are some tools that are too functional not to have. "This is one DIY workhorse tool you shouldn't do without," said Morin. Hot melt glue works on a variety of materials.
