Paper Craft Projects

Additional Craft Information:

If you are into making your own jewelry or enjoy working with a loom, you might want to know where to buy seed beads. These handy little pieces of glass or metal are the paint of an artist's loom or off loom beadwork and can be intricate or simple, large or small but typically any way in which it is created, the result is usually very beautiful.

DIY Craft Essential #1: Washi tape

You'd be surprised at how many things you can do, and how many tutorials out there are obsessed, with washi tape. The versatile paper tape with adorable designs makes great wall decor, paper crafts or can even spruce up your furniture.

DIY Craft Essential #2: Needle nose pliers

This tiny tool is great for small projects. "This is not only your go-to tool for opening and closing jump rings, bending wire, and securing crimp beads and ribbon ends, but pliers are also great for cutting through jewelry chain and wire," said Morin.

These beads can be purchased at most art supply stores or any other store that has an art supply department. But for convenience sake, the best place to find a large variety would be on the internet. There are several sites that offer a huge choice in quality, size, color and price, however, you should read reveiws before purchasing, especially auction sites; make sure you are not paying more than you would have paid for the beads on the individual seller's site.

DIY Craft Essential #3: X-acto knife

If you love stationary crafts, jewelry crafts or any delicate work -- you'll need a proper cutting tool. Not all scissors can do the job. "Remember first using scissors and cutting along the dotted lines in grade school?" Morin asked. "Hopefully, you’re attempting more challenging crafts as an adults."

DIY Craft Essential #4: Spray paint

Acrylic paints are also great for any DIY starter kit. However, if you're looking for a perfect, seamless finish on your furniture, art and home decor -- make some space to spray. It doesn't hurt to keep some cans in your favorite colors (as long as you store them properly).

As an example, consider just one retail item, Westrim Crafts 15052-XE Bead Box, this sells online for $7.00. However in comparing 22 sites that sold the same product, the highest price paid was on Ebay at $27.87, with the next highest, Arts & Crafts USA at $19.98, then FuntoyMall comes in at $18.30 with $9 for shipping, making it equal to the Ebay sale. The lowest price was Sears Marketplace at $7.13 and No shipping cost.

Buying wholesale is an option on the internet as well. You can find a large selection of any variety of beads at online stores like Fire Mountain Gems that sells the Japanese Delica beads as low as $.17 per gram, or at Black Bear Haversack Trading Post that will sell a Czech hank of 4000 beads as low as $4.

It is highly suggested that the Delica bead (because of its uniformity of color) be used for large projects that require one color. This advice is based on the premise that with other products, sometimes a manufacturers dye will change, and unless you purchased all of the beads necessary to finish the design initially, you might have to complete the project with a somewhat different hue.

Most online sites where you can buy seed beads will also have sections that provide good advise on design and technique, as well as sell the equipment you need to use in creating any design; like a solder gun, paints, glazes, needles, wire, thread, adhesives, alcohol inks and last but not least, a loom.

DIY Craft Essential #5: Painter's tape

Painter's tape is "perfect for for attempting the color block trend," said Morin. Plus, you'll need something to keep your projects neat and tidy, no matter what type of paints you use.

DIY Craft Essential #6: Hot glue gun

There are some tools that are too functional not to have. "This is one DIY workhorse tool you shouldn't do without," said Morin. Hot melt glue works on a variety of materials.
